Setting up a new Apple device

Getting a new iPhone, iPad or iPod is really exciting, but moving all your photos, contacts, messages and personal settings onto it can cause a headache. So this week we’re explaining the best way to do this.

If both devices use iOS 5 or later and you have an iCloud account, connect your original device to a power source and turn WiFi on. Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup, turn on iCloud Backup, and tap ‘Backup Now’.

To use iTunes, install the latest version on your computer and the latest version of iOS on your original device. Connect your original device to your computer and choose File > Devices > Backup in the iTunes window. To check your backup has been successful open iTunes Preferences, select the Devices tab and look for the name of your device then check the date and time of the backup.

Once this is done you can now switch your SIM card to your new device if you haven’t been given a different one to use.

Turn on your new device and follow the setup assistant. If using iTunes connect your new device to iTunes, press Restore from Backup, select the backup of your old device and tap Continue. If not prompted when connected, select File > Devices > Restore from Backup.

If using iCloud, choose Restore from iCloud Backup, tap next and enter your Apple ID and password. Choose the backup of your old device and tap Restore, when it has finished your device will restart.

Finally, connect your device to iTunes to sync the rest of your data, such as music and videos.

Calorie Counting Apps

We all know Christmas is a particularly calorific time of year, with plenty of parties to tempt us into over indulging. So this week we are telling you about some calorie counting apps you can use to keep track of your intake and work out how long a winter walk you will need to burn it all off!

Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal is a simplistic app that makes calorie counting fast and easy. Its food database is one of the largest out there with just over two million entries. It also has a barcode scanner and recipe calculator where you can enter your own recipes and calculate the nutritional contents.

The app also includes a database of exercises, goal tracker, reports and a way to connect with friends. You simply add what you eat and the activities you do to your profile and the app will work out how many calories you are consuming and burning off, and how close you are to achieving your goals.

Lose It! is a similar app with an easy to use interface, database of foods and a selection of activities to choose from. The app also has a barcode scanner so you can log packaged foods with ease.

Stopping Spam Emails

We recently received a reader’s letter telling us he was having lots of trouble with email spam since he purchased a new computer with Windows 8.1. So this week we are going to tell you about a simple solution to stop email spam and explain how you can install it.

The solution is a free spam filter called SPAMfighter that works for Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail. SPAMfighter has partnered up with Microsoft to create an anti spam filter that is strong, safe and highly effective.

The software automatically tests new mail as it arrives, and moves spam straight to your spam folder. If some spam mail gets through and into your inbox, you click a button and the spam mail is removed and the sender registered on the SPAMfighter database to ensure they cannot send SPAMfighter users spam in the future. The software works for all email accounts on your PC or laptop, and protects against phishing, identity theft and other email fraud.

To install the software, go to www.spamfighter.com and click on the box on the right that says ‘Spam filter Free Download.’ Next click on the green box that says ‘Start Download for Windows’ and follow the installation steps as they pop up.
