Easily edit photos

Camera technology on mobile devices is now taking over the need for a separate camera. Whether you have an Android or Apple phone or tablet, there are some easy tools that can help make your photos even more professional looking.

On Apple, prior to photo taking, you can select your effect and select a photo size from square to normal rectangle. Once you have taken the photo, you can crop out unnecessary detail, you can take panoramic shots, and you can enhance the colour or add effects to give a different view on your photo. You can also adjust the light and shadows on a photo to highlight or lighten certain areas.

On Android, before you take a photo you can adjust the white balance, select where you want the camera to focus and enhance the exposure. You also have a function to take a 360° view of the world and that’s before the photo has even been taken! After you have the photo, you can add a frame, adjust the exposure and colours. There is also the function to crop the image or add filters.

On both technologies, there are many camera apps offering much more extensive photo editing features including red eye reduction and further filters. Plus, on both, you are able to upload directly to social media or send via email. Camera phones and tablets really have come a long way in a short space of time, and are the go-to device for landscape shots to a sneaky selfie with a spotted celebrity!

What is Facetime?

FaceTime is an Apple-based video communication app that allows you and another Apple user to share face-to-face phone calls, for those times when you can’t be there in person. It is as simple as making a phone call, but it is best carried out on a reliable Wi-Fi connection for both parties. 3G and 4G connections are ok for short calls, but connection can drop out unless on Wi-Fi.

To make the FaceTime call from a phone, simply select the person you would like to call from your contacts lists and click on ‘Facetime’ under their name. Alternatively, if you make a regular phone call, you can select ‘Facetime’ from the centre of the screen during the call.

To make a Facetime call from an iPad, iPod Touch or Mac, you can select the FaceTime app button and search for the name of the person you would like to call. Once you have called a person, they will be stored in your ‘recents’ list for easy access the next time.

During the Facetime call, you can switch the camera angle, mute the sound or end the call by selecting any of the buttons on screen.

What is Google Drive?

With over 300 million monthly active users with a Google+ account and almost 12 billion Google searches carried out each month, it is fair to say that a large proportion of the world is using Google.

If you have a Google+, Gmail or Google account, then you are able to store up to 15GB of data on your Google Drive. This could be files, photos, video or other documents that you need to save but don’t want taking up valuable storage on your computer.

With Google Drive, you also have the ability to share with friends and family in a simple one-step process, which will enable you to access those photos you have been waiting for, or share with loved ones a precious video of your children or grandchildren.

If you don’t have a Google account, it is very easy to obtain one. Simply visit www.google.co.uk and click on the blue button on the top left where is says ‘Sign In’. Underneath the sign in boxes, there is a link that says ‘Create an account’. Click on this, and enter some basic information. Once you have completed this stage, your Google Drive will be accessible from Google when you click on the ‘Apps’ button in the top left corner.

WhatsApp Settings

WhatsApp is a hugely popular mobile app with over 700 million monthly users. Great for group messages and sending free SMS messages to friends and family wherever they are in the world, the app still has some downfalls but these can be quickly fixed.

One of the app’s annoying defaults is that all images and videos you receive via the app are automatically saved to your device’s photo album. This can be turned off by going to the “Settings” menu of the app, selecting “Chat Settings” and then switching the “Save Incoming Media” option to off.

Your WhatsApp privacy settings also automatically allow any user to view your “last seen” status. To change this, go to “Settings,” click “Account” > “Privacy” > “Last Seen.” Here, you can change your settings so only your contacts can see when you were last using the app, or so no one can. If you decide to hide your “last seen” data, you won’t be able to see anyone else’s.

One thing to take advantage of is that WhatsApp can automatically back up all of your chats. Just head to “Settings” > “Chat Settings” > “Chat Backup.” From here you can choose “Auto Backup” to store chats in your iCloud account on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
